The Garmin Fishfinder 300c features a high resolution QVGA screen, and easy to use menu and incorporates the Ultrascroll feature offering faster updates during faster boat speeds. The 300c offers a new flasher screen feature that displays sonar information on a circular depth scale.
Ease of Use
Like the previous Garmin models such as the 90, 140, and the 160, the 300c has been designed for its simplicity. Fully automatic it can be used by beginners without any configuration, experience or in-depth knowledge. There is a simulator mode that you can use to practice and learn the operation of the fishfinder before even taking the unit out, or fitting to your boat.
Screen/Display
The Garmin Fishinder 300c screen has a QVGA (Quality VGA) 256 color 3.5 inch display with 240 x 320 pixels resolution offering a greater advantage with easier clarity over the mono screen and other 16 color fishfinders such as the Garmin Fishfinder 160c.
300c Keypad
The buttons that operate the Garmin 300c have been re-designed from the previous Garmin fishfinder models. A single rocker switch now replaces the 3 buttons required for up,down and horizontal and vertical navigation.
Press and hold the power/backlight button to turn the fishfinder on or off. Press the power/backlight button quickly to adjust the backlight and night mode.
Dual Beam Transducer
Like the Garmin Fishfinder 90, Garmin Fishfinder 140 and Garmin Fishfinder 160c models, the Garmin Fishfinder 300c has the dual beam transducer combining both excellent shallow and deep water performance. The wide viewing angle offers you the ability to view fish beyond the side of the boat which is excellent for shallow water, and the narrow beam allows you to view what is directly under the boat in crisp detail - more useful for deeper water. For dual frequency transducer capability you will need to look at the Garmin Fishfinder 400c model.
Flasher Screen
The new Flasher Screen option on the 300c allows you to display sonar information on a circular scale. The scale indicates what is beneath the boat. It is organized in a ring that like a clock starts at the top and progresses in a clockwise direction. Sonar information flashes on the ring when it is received at the indicated depth. The different colors indicate varying strengths on the sonars return signal. By default the flasher screen uses the white settings which return red for strong returns, blue for the weakest returns and white indicates no return.
Split Screen Display
The split zoom screen allows you to split the screen into 2 vertical sections. The left hand side shows a picture of the full sonar data, while the right hand screen shows a user selectable portion of the full data but zoomed in to enlarge the display.
Ultrascroll
The ultrascroll feature constantly updates the sonar display automatically as you are moving at a rapid pace, so you never miss anything you pass over under the water. The display gain is configurable to either automatic or manual, allowing you to choose the level of display detail or let the fishfinder do it for you. There are 5 settings, Ultra, Fast (Default), Medium, Slow and Pause. If the graph is moving too fast simply select a slower setting or even pause to capture a screenshot of a particular area you cruise over.
Alarms
Audible alarms sound for detection of fish, shallow and deep water, and low battery. The alarms can be switched on or off and are configurable. You can set the alarm to sound for a specific depth from anywhere between 1 and 900 feet. The battery alarm can be set to warn you that the battery voltage is between 8.5 and 16 volts. Fish alarms can be set for all fish sizes, medium and large fish or to only large fish.
Temp Log
With the temperature capable transducer the temp log screen keeps a graphic log of temperature changes. The graph scrolls to the left as temperature data is received.
Autogain
The gain feature on the Garmin 300c, as on the 90, 140 & 160c controls the sensitivity of the sonars receiver. The default setting is set to automatic gain so it will intelligently work out the best display depending on the density of the features (including fish) under the boat. The autogain feature has 3 settings (High, Medium and Low). If you want more control simply switch to manual to see more detail on the screen and increase the gain, if the screen is too clutered, then decrease the gain as required. Selecting automatic or manual gain settings will come from experience / trial and error and will depend on where you are fishing and the conditions you are in.
Automatic Settings Backup
Your settings are automatically stored and remembered when you switch the unit off. After powering back on your settings are restored to how you left them.
